Mummy Burnout: Navigating the Challenges from an Islamic Counselling Perspective

Motherhood is a rewarding yet challenging role in Islam, with mothers being held in high esteem and regarded as the primary nurturers and caregivers of their children. However, like any other responsibility, being a mother can be overwhelming, and it’s not uncommon for Muslim mothers to experience burnout. In this blog post, we’ll explore the concept of “mummy burnout” from an Islamic counseling perspective and offer guidance on navigating these challenges while maintaining one’s faith and well-being.

Understanding Mummy Burnout:

Mummy burnout, also known as maternal burnout, refers to the physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion experienced by mothers due to the demands of raising children, managing a household, and often juggling other responsibilities such as work or community involvement. This phenomenon can lead to feelings of overwhelm, stress, and even a crisis of faith for some Muslim mothers. I have constantly been battling this while being a mother of two under two.

Signs of Mummy burnout

Some of the common signs of mum burnout are:

  1. Constantly feeling tired: even after having an average of 7 hours of sleep, eating, exercising, and doing some self-care.
  2. Feelings of being overwhelmed and stressed: even the smallest of tasks can feel daunting or cause you to become anxious for no reason.
  3. Cranky or yelling.
  4. Low tolerance
  5. Agitation
  6. Feelings of not being good enough
  7. Having only negative interactions with your children- this is a tricky one as this may not be the case; however, it may feel like you are only focusing on the negative aspects of being a parent, which may stop you from seeing the beauty and joys of motherhood.
  8. Wanting to escape.
  9. Feelings of suffocation- this can often be associated with the feelings of being trapped. As a mother, it can be challenging to have time to yourself, and if you are experiencing burnout, that feeling of being trapped and suffocated can intensify.

How to manage burnout from an Islamic Perspective:

The first step is identifying when you are experiencing burnout and becoming self-aware and attuned to your physical and emotional needs. As a mother, you are juggling many different things, such as working, doing household chores, and looking after your tiny humans who are dependent on you.

In Islam, the role of a mother is highly regarded and emphasized, with numerous evidences in the Quran and Sunnah highlighting the importance of caring for one’s children and fulfilling the responsibilities of motherhood. It is essential to recognize that the Islamic tradition acknowledges mothers’ challenges and provides guidance to help them navigate these difficulties.

Here are a few tips from Islamic tradition to help you manage your burnout:

Trust in Allah’s Wisdom:

The first step in addressing mummy burnout is remembering Allah is the Best of planners. He has entrusted you with the responsibility of being a mother because He knows you are capable of it. Trust in His wisdom and rely on Him to guide you through your challenges.

Self-Care and Seeking Help:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized the importance of self-care and seeking help when needed. It is not a sign of weakness to ask for support from your spouse, family, or friends. Taking care of your physical and mental health is essential to fulfil your role as a mother effectively. I found the Mum burnout podcast on the Ruh App helpful, as Runda Ebied goes through the different ways you can manage and cope with this.

Prioritizing Responsibilities:

Islam encourages a balanced approach to fulfilling one’s responsibilities. Prioritize your duties as a mother, but remember that you have other roles and responsibilities, such as being a wife, a daughter, or an individual with personal goals and aspirations. Finding a balance that suits your circumstances is key to avoiding burnout.

Patience and Du’a (Supplication):

In challenging moments, turn to Allah in prayer. Seek His guidance, strength, and patience to help you overcome difficulties. The practice of patience (Sabr) is highly praised in Islam, and it can be a source of strength for mothers facing burnout.

Community Support:

Engage with your local Islamic community to seek support and guidance. Attend parenting classes, support groups, and events that connect you with other mothers facing similar challenges. Sharing experiences and learning from one another can be incredibly empowering.

How can counselling help?

Sometimes, it can be too much, and you may need that extra support. That’s where counseling could be beneficial. Working with an experienced professional in a safe and non-judgemental space can be a great way to explore mummy burnout and help you identify why you may be feeling a certain way and what can be a helpful skill or resource you can use. Remember, being a mother is a beautiful and rewarding journey, but it doesn’t come without challenges. You don’t need to do this alone. Reach out when you need it, and when your buckets are too full, don’t be afraid to empty them by using the resources around you.

Mummy burnout is a real issue that many Muslim mothers face, and it’s essential to address it as soon as you notice this. While the role of a mother is highly esteemed in Islam, the faith also provides guidance on how to navigate the challenges of motherhood while maintaining one’s well-being and spirituality. By trusting in Allah’s wisdom, practicing self-care, seeking help, finding balance, and embracing patience and community support, Muslim mothers can effectively manage mummy burnout and continue fulfilling their vital roles with devotion and strength. Remember, you are not alone in this journey; with faith and resilience, you can overcome these challenges.
